Club Championship

On beautiful sunny August Day the members of The Ridge at Manitou took to the course to determine this years Club Champions. Our Members competed in 5 different divisions: Men’s (under 18 handicap), Chairman’s (over 18 handicap), Senior Men’s, Ladies and Juniors. The conditions were excellent and the competition was fierce. Ron Bastine carded a 76 to take the overall Men’s Championship.

The day finished with a delicious BBQ lunch and a gathering amongst friends. It was a great day and everyone enjoyed themselves. Thank you to those members who participated and congratulations to our 2011 Champions.

Course Update July 21

It has been a little while since my last blog. The turf department has been very busy getting the Ridge into the best shape possible for the summer season. We are into our first heat wave and the turf, not to mention my staff, are feeling the effects of the heat. Fortunately, we did a lot of prep work this spring to ensure the healthiest turf possible going into the summer stress period. One of the cultural practises we performed was a deep aeration of our greens with our Vertidrain. This machine is made to go deep and fracture the soil. Thus greatly reducing compaction and increasing the water infiltration throughout the soil profile. We performed this in mid June and I am happy to say that it is the fastest the greens have healed from any aeration practise that we have performed. You could hardly tell we did anything a week after we aerated. Check out the video below showing the Vertidrain in action.

After we drain we topdress heavy to fill in all the holes and help dilute the thatch in the profile. The hole process took us about 5 hours to complete.

As we move through the season, the long hours and environmental conditions can be tough on the staff. I have had it remarked to me that it must be great to work outside. I love it personally but most people are only out on the nice days to play golf. They don’t have to contend with some of the conditions that we have to put up with in performing our job. We work rain or shine, Cold snap or heat wave, through the air force of black flies, mosquitoes, and deer flies. The grass never stops growing and we never stop maintaining. It can be a little hard on the moral of the staff after a while. That’s why we have appreciation events like the one held at Parry Sound Golf Club in the latter part of June. It was a great day to head out to another course and have some fun. There were lots of stories of amazing shots, unfortunately there was only one video shot that day. Check it out below. It was my group and we had a guy in it who thought he was a long ball hitter. Turns out he was and just missed hitting one of his fellow employees in the group ahead of us.

A couple of tips I would like to pass on to the readers now that we are in the dry season. Firstly, be aware of where you drive your cart. The turf staff spends a lot of time and effort to keep the grass alive during times of drought. Believe me, it can be a very tough job. Something that would help tremendously would be for golfer not to drive carts through extremely dry areas. The added stress of the tire pressure on the grass is enough to send turf that is already knocking on death’s door over the edge. The picture here shows the effects of a trip through one of these areas. You will see those tire tracks for weeks.

The other is ball mark repair. If everyone could repair there ball marks and divots it would really help keep the course in good playing condition. This goes for any course you are on, not just the Ridge. Below is an outline on how to properly fix your ball mark.

How to Properly Repair Your Ball Mark

Step 1

Look for a golf ball mark on the green near your ball. This would be where the ball landed.

Step 2

Use a ball mark repair tool to fix the divot left from the ball.

Step 3 Insert the ball repair tool into the outer edge of the ball divot, with the prongs angled at 45 degrees. Gently work the turf up and back into place by gently pushing up and forward.

Step 4

Repeat step 3 around the entire ball mark as necessary.

Step 5 Pat down the ball mark with a putter, until the mark is as smooth as the rest of the putting surface.

Step 6 Continue on with your game.

Please repair all your ball marks as well as any others you happen to see. This will keep our greens in great shape and the players that come after you will thank you for it.

Please don’t forget to fill your divots as well.

The Ridge Team Picture

This week a few of the clubhouse staff got together to take a team picture and show off some the Golf Shop merchandise. The purpose of taking this picture was to see if we could win a contest for having the best team picture. We wanted to have some fun with it so we tried to incorporate as much Golf Shop merchandise and natural beauty of the Golf Course as we could.

Ladies Fun Day!

July 5th marked the inaugural playing of the Ridge at Manitou’s Ladies Fun Day and the event was a smashing success, featuring a great day of friendly competition and exciting activity! The day kicked off late in the morning under sunny skies and even a quick rain shower couldn’t dampen the spirits of the participants.

Congratulations to our winners Karen and Ashley Hummel, who fired a spectacular 73 for a decisive victory! Of course, not everyone was able to shoot such a terrific score but everyone came away happy after a splendid dinner and a glass of champagne. Participants were even treated to a fashion show highlighting the latest and greatest in golf apparel from the Ridge Golf Shop.

All in all the day was a lot of fun and we would like to thank everyone who joined us for the event. We look forward to seeing you all again next year!
