Acclaimed golf writer Lorne Rubinstein’s hole-by-hole survey of the shots and scenery created by award winning course designer Tom McBroom.
“I love the experience of golf as a four-hour journey into nature,” McBroom says. ”I think that when you let the holes wander over the landscape and meander through it, you automatically get a better routing and create a more enjoyable experience.”
One of the ways McBroom achieves this is with “out and in” routing. The sense of moving farther and farther away from Manitouwabing Lake and the clubhouse, then turning around with a sense of anticipation for the road home. Back and forth, out and in, turn and return: the golfer’s odyssey.
McBroom integrates all natural elements of the landscape into a coherent attractive course. At the same, he’s subtly altered the environment to create memorable golf holes.
“I think the Ridge is going to age well”, McBroom says. It should, because it evokes the game’s timeless values, and because those who play the course will feel refreshed and rejuvenated, and will have found comfort and sanctuary.
